MAP READING AND NAVIGATION COURSE
Saturday 2nd May 2020
For those new members or old who would like to solve the mysteries of map reading, the annual White Cliffs Navigation Course is being run again next spring. It is simple, entertaining and includes a beautifully scenic walk to try out your new-found skills. The course may even inspire you to graduate to a walk leader. But it is suitable for anyone who just wants to crack the code of map reading and know which way is north on their compass.
The first part of the course involves simple self learning. You will receive an email with links so you can watch techniques being demonstrated on video. There is no pressure. You can watch it in the comfort of your own home.
On the day of the course we spend a couple of hours in a 'classroom' setting, confirming map reading skills and. In small groups of 3 or 4 we then walk a 5.5-mile course with colleagues and an instructor, taking it in turns to lead a section of the course. We are constantly using the compass and map throughout the walk confirming and embedding map reading and navigation skills. We, of course, have a lunch meal on the way!
The course finishes at about 4pm with cakes and coffee at a local pub, followed by the presentation of course certificates. It's a good day out and a great walk with spectacular views. The skills you have learned can be applied to walk leading or enjoying walks with a greater understanding. This year the course will be £10 per person, non-refundable. This is to cover the cost of the course.
Please note Saturday 2nd May is not the bank holiday weekend
